Q1 mcq 1 mark
You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things. The figure of speech used here is
  • A. Simile
  • B. Personification
  • C. Metaphor
  • D. Alliteration
Correct Answer: C — Solution

The correct answer is Metaphor. The speaker refers to the people directly as 'blocks' and 'stones' to imply their insensitivity, which is a direct comparison without using 'like' or 'as' (which would be a Simile). Personification attributes human qualities to inanimate objects, and Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds; neither applies here.

Q2 mcq 1 mark
.................... Queen Elizabeth is .................. famous British liner. The appropriate articles to be filled in the blanks are
  • A. The, a
  • B. A, an
  • C. A, a
  • D. The, an
Correct Answer: A — Solution

The correct answer is 'The, a'. We use the definite article 'The' before the names of ships. 'A' is used before 'famous' because it begins with a consonant sound.

Q3 mcq 1 mark
The lady will come to the door, .................. . The appropriate question tag to be added is
  • A. will she ?
  • B. won’t she ?
  • C. wouldn’t she ?
  • D. would she ?
Correct Answer: B — Solution

The correct answer is 'won't she?'. When the statement is positive ('The lady will come'), the question tag must be negative. Since the modal verb is 'will', the negative contraction is 'won't'.

Reading Passage

Some people think that the aim of education is merely to give knowledge. These people want students to read books, and do nothing else but add to their knowledge. Others believe that knowledge alone is not enough; only that which enables a man to earn his living can be called education. Such people think that bread is more important than anything else. Still others believe that education should aim solely at making good citizens and good patriots. All these people see only one of the several purposes of education. As a matter of fact, education should aim at all these three things together. It should give men knowledge, make them self-reliant and able to serve others. Education should not produce citizens who, while they love their own freedom, take away the freedom of others. It should produce men who love their own country but who do not want to harm other countries.
