Reading Passage
The first Stethoscope — the instrument which has become the trademark of doctors around the world — was constructed because a young doctor was shy. It was devised in a matter of moments by the early 19th century, by French Physician Rene Laennec.
One day in 1816 Laennec was consulted by a woman, whose symptoms suggested that she might be suffering from heart disease. Laennec’s modesty prevented him from following the usual practice of placing ear to listen to heartbeat. So he rolled up a newspaper and used that instead. Realising that the tube magnified the sound, he went on to construct a 300 mm ( 1 ft ) long cylinder of wood — the first true Stethoscope.
